ABOUT SARAH

Sarah grew up in the deserts and mountains of Arizona. She studied cello and historical performance practice on viola da gamba with Catharina Meints at Oberlin Conservatory, graduating cum laude in 1992. She continued her education at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, studying Baroque cello with J. ter Linden and violone with M. Urquhart. In 2012 Sarah received a degree in Physical Therapy from Avans College in Breda.

Sarah plays a wide range of low and historic stringed instruments from periods ranging from the medieval era to the 21st century: vielle, violas da gamba, violone, Baroque cello, Classical cello, modern cello and modern cello with loop-station.

She has earned recognition in all of these areas. Sarah has toured South Africa, South America, South Korea, Europe and The United States with a variety of different groups including Musica Temprana, modern dance group Krisztina de Châtel, Furor Musicus, Apollo’s Fire: The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, mime/dance ensemble Walking Faces, tango funk trio The Mental Chamber Orchestra, Super Librum and Ensemble Rei. Sarah has played well-known venues, from Utrechts’s Vredenburg to the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, from Alte Oper Frankfurt to Seoul Arts Center. She has also played less well-known but unique locations, such as the Jesuit missions of the Chiquitos in Bolivia, the medieval churches in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands, military base Bernhardkazerne and the streets of Arizona.

Sarah is a sought-after gamba and cello soloist for Bach's Passions. After a serious accident that impacted her hearing, she became interested in composing her own music with loop-station. In 2017 she released a CD of her compositions entitled Cello Trip. Performances of her solo program, which includes classical works as well as her own compositions, have been ecstatically received in both the Netherlands and the U.S. In 2016 she founded her cello street project, the AZproject, in which she uses classical music to connect with people and change their city in a beautiful but humerous manner. In 2017 she introduced her project in the Netherlands as the NLproject.
